Elon Musk Announces Plan To Merge Human Brains With AI

Elon Musk finally revealed on July 16 on Neuralink’s project – its purpose, its progress and what it can achieve in the future. The presentation was live-streamed from the California Academy of Science.

Neuralink’s goal is to be able to create a connection between the human brain with microscopic processors through links that are no more than the breadth of a human hair. These threads read the activities in the brain, decode, and sends commands to sensors inside the computer that is installed behind the ear.

Basically, it lets you do whatever you want through your mind alone with the help of the small computer.

Musk talks about his ambitious goals:

“Ultimately we can do a full brain machine interface. This is going to sound pretty weird. Ultimately we can achieve a symbiosis with artificial intelligence.

“This is not a mandatory thing, this is something you can choose to have if you want. This is going to be really important at a civilization-level scale. Even in a benign AI scenario, we will be left behind. With a high-bandwidth brain machine interface we can go along for the ride and have the option of merging with AI.”

“Unless we have some sort of brain-machine interface that can solve brain ailments of all kinds, whether it’s an accident or congenital, any kind of disorder or a spinal disorder, we can solve that with a chip,” Musk continues. “This is something most people don’t understand yet.

“All of this will occur quite slowly. It’s not like Neuralink will suddenly have neural lace and start taking over people’s brains. It will take a long time, and people will see it coming.”

People were skeptical. Obviously, this is a very overachieving attitude even from a popular engineer such as Musk himself. The idea of merging the brain with computers and AI is not new, but the way to achieve that has yet been found.

What this did probably reminds us of an episode from Black Mirror season 1 which is titled ‘The Entire History of You’. A sort of ear chip was installed in the back of the ears of people which allows them to store ‘memories’ as if they are video files. It was also the reason for a man to resort to violence, a woman to lose her family and a baby who couldn’t be sure who his father is.
