‘Flying-V’ Plane Named After A Guitar Being Build By KLM Could Revolutionise Air Travel Forever
Beating out other commercial airplanes.
Beating out other commercial airplanes.
Developed by the Delft Technical University in the Netherlands and funded by KLM for designs, the stunning ‘Flying-V plane has the same wingspan just like any other conventional plane and has a carrying capacity of about 314 passengers and more.
Named after an electric guitar developed by Gibson in 1958, and used by several legendary players like Brian May, Keith Richards, Jimi Hendrix, and Eddie Van Halen, the unique aeronautical project, which could also beat out the use of other commercial airplanes forever, is configured to use 20 percent less fuel.
Specifically, the wing is hosting passenger’s spaces, fuel tanks, sophisticated infrastructures as well as the cargo hold. Similarly, the Flying-V plane has a total width of about 215ft (65m) and its length is slightly shorter at 180ft (55m). Its size, however, did make it a comparable rival to Boeing 787 and Airbus A350.
Being a potential leader in the field of aviation innovation, the KLM Chief Executive, Pieter Elbers had held back from revealing the extent of the project. The detail of what the inside actually looks like being rare.
On the other hand, the dean of the university faculty of aerospace engineering – Professor Henri Werij had equally commented on the project, stating that the object was to enable aviation more sustainable.
‘New and energy-efficient aircraft designs such as the Flying-V are important, as are new forms of propulsion. Our ultimate aim is emission-free flight,’ he said.
